Power company Mercury Energy is warning people not to give out credit card details, amid concern about a scam targetting its customers.
A woman in Christchurch has told Radio New Zealand News she received a phone call from someone saying Mercury had been bought by Meridian Energy and she should arrange a card payment to avoid having her power cut off.
Mercury Energy general manager James Munro says anyone receiving such a call should ask the person for their customer account number.
He says if they can't provide it, the call probably involves a scam and they should hang up and call the police.
Mr Munro says so far, no-one has paid any money to the scammers.
