Prison escaper caught in Auckland

9:54 pm on 17 October 2011

A dangerous prisoner who spent a week on the run has been caught in Auckland.

Aaron Forden, 30, broke out of the Mt Eden Corrections Facility early on 10 October.

He is the first inmate to break out of the jail since it passed into private management in March this year.

In May this year, Forden escaped from Whangarei District Court and in 2008 escaped from the old Mt Eden Prison using a rope of knotted sheets.

Auckland city area commander Inspector Andrew Coster says Forden was arrested without incident near Silverdale about 7pm on Monday.

Forden is to appear in Auckland District Court on Tuesday charged with escaping custody.
