Tahiti-infos reports that vehicles were stopped west of Papeete and the five drivers caught with the saliva test admitted they had smoked the drug in the preceding hours.
The tests on the spot only determine if a driver tests positive, leaving it to the hospital labs to determine the degree of influence in a blood test.
Depending on the reading, an offender risks losing their car or being jailed.
The news site says by law, driving under the influence of a banned substance is punished with two years in prison and a 6,000 US dollar fine.
