Forum praises Fiji for election

12:33 pm on 24 September 2014

The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat has congratulated the government and people of Fiji for the success of its historic national election.

It says the election marks a critical turning point for Fiji's return to democracy and is warmly welcomed by the secretariat.

Fiji has been suspended from the Forum since 2009 after it had failed to meet earlier commitments to hold elections.

Fiji later set up a rival body, called the Pacific Islands Development Forum, and had said it would not return to the main Forum body if New Zealand and Australia remained members.

The secretary general, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, has written to congratulate Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama on his election win and the resounding success of the poll.

He says the people of Fiji must be commended for their full participation and results that reflect the will and mandate of the Fijian people.

The secretariat says the Forum Ministerial Contact Group will now have to make an assessment on whether Fiji should be re-admitted.
