Sport: PNG cricket claim underdog tag in historic ODI

12:33 pm on 7 November 2014

The Papua New Guinea Cricket Coach Dipak Patel is grabbing the underdog tag for their historic one day international series against Hong Kong in Townsville.

The two nations were awarded ODI status by the International Cricket Council following their fifth and sixth placings in the World Cup Qualifiers in New Zealand earlier this year.

Patel says Hong Kong will probably be favourites.

"They've probably played a little bit more competitive cricket, as far as international cricket, than we have. That could be to an advantage to us too. The fact that they know very little about us, albeit that we have played each other recently. They will have a fair bit of experience, that we don't have."

Patel says the Hong Kong team won't hold too many surprises for his side.

"We know a fair bit about them. We've played against them quite a few times over the last few years so it's nothing new. They may come up with one or two new names but other than that, I think we are well aware of what they are capable of and what they will bring to the table."
