Queen 'deeply saddened' by tragedy

7:05 pm on 25 November 2010

The Queen is deeply saddened by the Pike River mine tragedy.

In a message to Prime Minister John Key, the Queen says she is deeply saddened by the news there is now no hope for the men trapped in the mine.

She says her heart goes out to the families and friends of the 29 miners - who included two Britons - and to all who have been touched by the disaster.

The Queen sent her thanks and deep appreciation to everyone who worked so hard to attempt a rescue and also to those who will have a part to play in the task of healing the pain felt throughout New Zealand and around the world.
