Public consultation closes this week on legislation enacting the first stage of the Government's welfare changes.

The legislation, which includes work obligations for people on the Domestic Purposes Benefit and sets up a new youth benefit, is being considered by Parliament's social services committee.

Committee chair Sam Lotu-Iiga says public consultation on the bill closes on Friday and submissions will be heard later this month in Wellington.

He says the committee is expected to report back to the House by 31 May.
