Labour has confirmed it will stand a candidate in Te Tai Tokerau, making a by-election there a three-horse race.
Sitting MP Hone Harawira plans to resign and force a by-election in the Maori electorate and seek a mandate for his new Mana party.
The Maori Party has already said it will stand a candidate against its former MP.
The Labour Party council agreed it should also stand a candidate, and that decision was approved by the Labour caucus on Tuesday.
Labour's candidate will be list MP Kelvin Davis.
