Harawira officially confirmed MP for Te Tai Tokerau

Hone Harawira has been confirmed as the MP for Te Tai Tokerau after official by-election results were released on Wednesday.

Mr Harawira forced the by-election in the Northland electorate after quitting Parliament and the Maori Party earlier this year. He has become leader of the Mana Party.

With all of the votes counted, Mr Harawira has increased his majority from the tally on the night, from 867 to 1117.

His final vote is 6065, up from the preliminary count of 5611.

The Labour Party's Kelvin Davis came in second with 4948 votes.

Māori Party candidate Solomon Tīpene received 1087 votes.

The Electoral Commission says 32,855 voters were enrolled with a turnout of 41.38%
