Three people have been charged over an attack in Dunedin that police say had a racial element.

Police say an Asian couple and their teenage sons were walking along George Street on Monday afternoon when they met a group of drunk people.

The group made racial comments to the family, before an 18-year-old female allegedly punched the father once, and an 18-year-old male did the same.

A 22-year old woman allegedly threw a quarter-full bottle of wine at the father.

The police say the 22-year-old appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday charged with assault with a weapon.

The two others have been charged with assault but are yet to appear.
