U-turn by Auckland traffic

8:27 pm on 3 July 2012

New research indicates traffic congestion in Auckland has made a U-turn.

A report to Auckland Council's transport committee say congestion has returned to levels similar to that of 2004.

It attributes this to a range of factors including investment in roading infrastructure, economic conditions and petrol costs.

But it says congestion in the city still has significant economic and social costs.

And it also forecasts an increase of 46% in motor vehicle use between 2011 and 2041.

In comparison to Australian cities, the report says Auckland's congestion is similar to Perth's.
