Auckland business owners have told the Building and Construction Minister proposals for dealing with earthquake-prone buildings could put them out of business.
More than 100 people attended a public meeting at the Auckland Town Hall on Tuesday to hear the minister, Maurice Williamson, outline the Government's plans.
Under the proposals, buildings would have to be assessed within five years.
Owners of buildings labelled as earthquake-prone would then have up to 10 years to strengthen or demolish them.
Some owners of heritage buildings are worried that if the guidelines go ahead, it will put them out of business.
One said she will not be able to afford to either strengthen or demolish her building.
Another said the proposals are not fair for heritage building owners.
Mr Williamson made it clear to the gathering that the views would be heard, and that no decisions have been made yet.
