The teenager accused of murdering an Auckland homeless man can be named for the first time.

Name suppression was lifted for 17-year-old Steven Ray Churchis when he appeared at the High Court in Auckland on Wednesday.

Mr Churchis' lawyer, Peter Winter, had sought continued suppression which was opposed by Radio New Zealand.

Justice Brewer found in favour of the news media but the arguments cannot be reported for legal reasons.

Edwin Linder, who was 42, died in hospital in August, days after being found beaten and unconscious in Mills Lane in the central city.

Mr Churchis has entered a plea of not guilty and will face a High Court trial in July next year. He has been remanded in custody.
