Winery hails use of solar power

Less than three months after turning to solar power, a Marlborough winery says it is producing more wine using this source than any other company in New Zealand.

Spy Valley Wines installed solar panels in August and is now generating 15% of its product using solar energy.

General manager Blair Gibbs said the decision to go solar made economic sense at a time when the high dollar is forcing exporters to be more creative with their branding.

Mr Gibbs said Spy Valley Wines can generate power for about 6 cents per kilowatt hour; about 19 cents less than the average commercial cost.
