Thieves target insecure properties

New Plymouth police have issued a warning over a spate of property thefts throughout the city and are reminding people to take proper measures to protect their property.

Senior Sergeant Thomas McIntyre said the police believe a couple of groups are targeting properties with unlocked doors or open windows and insecure sheds and garages.

He said three young men were arrested last week and charged with several thefts from vehicles and burglaries, with two given jail terms as a result.

Police believe most of the thieves are operating on foot and targeting smaller items that are easy to carry.
