A teenager charged with fatally stabbing a promising young rugby league player outside a Grey Lynn party has asked for bail.

Vincent Skeen's lawyer Lorraine Smith applied for bail in the High Court in Auckland today.

Justice Heath suppressed all the legal arguments made in front of a packed public gallery.

After hearing the arguments he reserved his decision.

Mr Skeen was charged with the murder of Luke Tipene, who played for the Kiwis under-16 side.

Members of Luke's family wept in the public gallery and some held hands during today's hearing.
