Napier City Council is calling for the Local Government Commission to recall its debt and infrastructure report, claiming it is riddled with inaccurate information.

The commission is proposing the amalgamation of Napier, Hastings, Wairoa, Central Hawke's Bay and Hawke's Bay Regional Councils.

Its report, published on Friday, says Napier has underinvested in roads and water services and faces a $45 million deficit to improve them.

Napier City Council is strongly opposed to amalgamation - and chief executive Wayne Jack said the data used in the report was old and inaccurate.

"The people of Hawke's Bay need to know the real details before they can make a decision on amalgamation."

Mr Jack said the amalgamation process needed to be put on hold until the concerns were addressed.

The Local Government Commission has said it stands by the report - which was produced by a global engineering consultancy - but it will consider the issues raised by the city council.
