Police in Wellington have called off the search for a kayaker believed to be missing off Island Bay on the South Coast.
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter and police maritime boat, Lady Liz, assisted in the search which has been called off due to darkness.
The police say they received a call shortly before 7.30 pm this evening saying there was a kayaker about 100 metres offshore.
They are not sure if the kayaker is in trouble.
They are asking for anyone who knows about a person kayaking in the Island Bay area at about 7pm today or knows of anyone out kayaking who has failed to return home to contact them.
