State Highway 3 remains closed between Sanson and Palmerston North after a fatal head-on collision this afternoon.
Police said emergency services were called about 2pm.
The driver of the car involved died of his injuries, while two people in a four-wheel drive vehicle suffered serious injuries.
Police said the road was likely to be closed until 7pm, and traffic was being diverted via Mount Stewart Halcombe Road.
