Firefighters are monitoring hotspots after a massive blaze at an industrial complex in Hawera.

Chief fire officer Mike Fairweather said last night's fire completely destroyed a building at Smith Brothers Trading Company on State Highway 45.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at 9.30pm, and it was finally put out at 6am.

Mr Fairweather said three nearby homes were evacuated at the height of the blaze, with 63 firefighters and 12 fire engines from all over Taranaki used to battle the fire.

A crew was monitoring hotspots, and fire investigators were due to arrive at the scene.
