The Governor-General has presented this year's Anzac Award to Barbara Cunningham from Mataura in Southland.

Mrs Cunningham, a former midwife, has lived in the town, near Gore, for 33 years.

She leads several projects including the Mataura Community Garden and is an elected member of the Mataura Community Board.

Speaking at the Government House ceremony this evening, Sir Jerry Mateparae said Mrs Cunningham was someone making a real difference in the world around her.

Sir Jerry said she was committed to her community, and lived her life in an Anzac spirit.

Last year, Louise Nicholas, who currently works with Rape Prevention Education as its national survivor advocate, received the award.
