Triple-fatality driver was stopped earlier for speeding

Police in Waikato have revealed that the driver of a car involved in a triple fatality on State Highway 2 on Tuesday night had earlier been stopped for speeding.

Mary Kingi-Te Purei, 18, and two others the same age, all from Gisborne, died when their vehicle and a ute collided near Maramarua.

Police say the car was stopped for travelling at 130 kilometres an hour near Gisborne earlier in the day.

They say an infringement notice recovered from the car showed the driver was in breach of her graduated licence by carrying passengers.

Police say the law in such situations permits them to issue only an infringement notice, not seize a vehicle or stop people from carrying on with their journey.
