A witness to an Auckland hit-and-run in which a baby and a man were injured says he's shocked the driver didn't stop.

Police say the incident happened in the Manurewa town-centre just at about 1.40pm on Sunday.

A local shop-keeper, Robin Hassan, says he heard a couple arguing outside his shop and saw the man holding a baby trying to cross Great South Road when he was hit by a car.

Mr Hassan says the car braked to drive around where the man was lying, but then sped off.

He says he was very shocked that the car's driver didn't stop and check.

Mr Hassan says he pulled the unconscious man off the road, while someone grabbed the baby and handed it to its mother.

Both were taken to hospital and initially the baby was thought to be critically injured, but the baby has now been discharged.
