Two big Canterbury fires brought under control

Two fires burning in Canterbury are contained and firefighters hope to have them out by the middle of next week.

High temperatures and strong winds sparked several fires around the region, including one near Waimate and another on Leithfield Beach.

The Department of Conservation regional fire control officer, Tony Tealing, says he expects the efforts at the Waimate fire to be limited to watching hotspots.

Mr Tealing says the Leithfield fire is well contained but the firefighters there will need to stay over Christmas, as he doesn't expect it to be extinguished until next week.

Some fires ignited from the remnants of farm burnoffs in late winter and early spring, so he's asking people who have had large burnoffs in recent months to ensure there's no risk of re-ignition.
