Rent rise too much for one shop owner

An Auckland shop owner says a hapu's plan to raise his land rent from zero to almost $63,000 a year is excessive.

A 15-year ground-rent holiday given by Ngati Whatua o Orakei to retailers in the 8 on Quay Street shopping area near the city's waterfront has lapsed, and the hapu says each small shop must now pay up to $31,500.

Video Ezy owner Paul Bray says the $63,000 he must pay for two shops is too much and he may have to leave the complex.

Ngati Whatua o Orakei acknowledges some shops may have to close but says it's doing what any business would do.
