The wreckage of a helicopter recovered from the sea after a fatal crash off Karikari Peninsula in the Far North is expected be lifted ashore on Sunday morning.

A barge carrying the wreckage has berthed at Stone Store wharf in Kerikeri. The intended destination had been Paihia, but this was altered en route.

The Civil Aviation Authority says the wreckage will be taken to secure storage at Auckland Airport, where accident investigators will inspect it.

The helicopter was part of a scrub-fire search and rescue operation during a scrub fire on Wednesday night when it crashed. The two men on board were killed.
