More help needed on some Southland farms

Federated Farmers says it has identified about 25 farms in Southland which will need help to keep feed levels adequate, following last month's snow storm.

A team of volunteers visited farmers in the region last week, delivering food parcels and assessing exactly what support was needed.

Federation president Don Nicolson, estimates the storm has cost the province about $50 million in lost milk production and stock losses.

He told Country Life he had never experienced anything like the worst day, on 22 September, which brought a constant barrage of hail, sleet, rain and strong freezing windd.

Mr Nicolson said the storm has been emotionally tough for all farmers, but they must move on and can't let this consume them.
