Police say a man with a hunting knife who sparked an Armed Offenders Squad callout near Paeroa may face further charges.

The man, 23, has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to his mother.

Investigators are returning to the scene of the stand-off, which closed State Highway 26 for about three hours on Wednesday.

The man's mother managed to escape after locking herself in a bedroom and was later treated for a head wound believed to have been caused by an iron bar.

Police fired tear gas into the house to force the man to give himself up after negotiations failed.

The man is to undergo a psychiatric assessment.
