Govt should help Far North flood victims, says council

A Far North District council officer says Kaeo flood victims are in limbo through no fault of their own and deserve government help.

A number of damaged homes in the area must be lifted or moved to comply with the Building Act, following last year's floods.

Flood recovery manager, Andy Dowdle, says the Act requires homeowners to guard against known hazards.

He says their insurance policies don't cover the cost of lifting the buildings, and there is no government policy to allow them to claim compensation.

Mr Dowdle says the homeowners are stuck in unsaleable homes, while at risk from further floods.

The Far North flood victims are hoping to hear on Monday if the Government will help with funding to lift their homes.
