District health boards in Auckland and Northland want an extra $281 million worth of capital investment over the next five years to expand their facilities and services.
Documents issued by the National Party on Monday show that the four boards have told the Government that they are under critical pressure across several fronts: emergency medicine, general medicine, cardiology, renal and respiratory care.
Counties - Manukau DHB says the extra investment is needed to cope with a rapidly expanding and an aging population.
Chief executive Geraint Martin says the three district health boards in Auckland and the Northland DHB are asking the Ministry of Health for the extra investment at a meeting of its national capital committee in November.
National Party health spokesperson Tony Ryall released the report on Monday, saying it is as hocking report card showing nine years of neglect.
However, Labour Party health spokesperson David Cunliffe played down the report's findings, saying the Government has invested more than $2 billion in the largest hospital building programme in living memory.
