Appeal withdrawn over prison sentence for threats to PM

A Taranaki farmer jailed for threatening former prime minister Helen Clark with a letter containing white powder has withdrawn an appeal against his sentence.

Douglas Hancock, 61, admitted making criminal threats after sparking a full-scale security alert at the Beehive on 11 August.

In an accompanying letter, he called Miss Clark a "gutter mole" and warned her to leave the country while she still could.

The powder was actually flour, but 58 Beehive staff were evacuated and four had to be hosed down.

On 11 November, Hancock was sentenced to prison for nine months to deter copycat offending.

He was due to challenge his sentence in the High Court at New Plymouth on Monday but the appeal has been withdrawn.
