Cool store fire now under control

9:49 am on 21 December 2008

A massive blaze at an Auckland cool store continues to burn.

The fire at the Southdown freezing works on Hugo-Johnston Drive in Penrose started at about 6pm on Saturday. However, firefighters now have it under control.

The Fire Service describes the fire as very deep-seated.

About 50 fire fighters and 15 fire engines are on site battling the blaze, which is located on the ground, second, third and fourth stories of the derelict building.

Fire fighters have to fight the fire from outside the building as it's too dangerous to go inside.

The building is clad with asbestos. The Auckland Regional Public Health Service advises the public is to stay away.

Nearby streets remain closed.

Chief fire officer Graham Fuller says they are making progress but it is very slow. He does not expect they will be able to enter the building before Monday.
