Contact Energy is to unveil plans to build as many as four hydro electric dams on the Clutha River in Otago.
The energy company will present the options for its New Clutha Energy Scheme to local communities within the next 10 days.
It has appointed a project manager who will be based at the Clyde Dam.
Company spokesperson Jonathan Hill stresses the plans are provisional and Contact Energy wants to gauge public reaction before any detailed proposals are drawn up.
Once the schemes are made public the company will seek feedback on the plans from communities along the river.
Contact Energy inherited detailed plans for hydro dams at Luggate, Queensberry and Beaumont, from the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand.
The company says it wants to place all the possibilities on the table before further developing the plans.
