AgResearch - Lincoln merger concept hailed

Despite a lack of detail yet, Federated Farmers is convinced a merger mooted between AgResearch and Lincoln University has merit.

The two have agreed in principle and will now hold a consultative process before taking a recommendation to the Government.

The stated aim is to create a world-class, university integrating research, education and extension focused on New Zealand's primary industries.

President Don Nicholson says it will result in research being focused on productivity while eliminating duplication. This means faster and smarter outcomes for New Zealand's farmers.

He thinks the plan is an innovative model that other universities and Crown research institutes could follow.

Last year, two other Research Institutes, HortResearch and Crop & Food, merged to form Plant & Food.
