Four children were rescued from the sea north of Auckland after their boat capsized on Sunday afternoon.

Police say the children were all under 12 and were out fishing with an adult off the Whangaparaoa peninsula.

They say their 12 foot aluminium dingy was hit by a wave and they were thrown into the water.

A person on shore saw the incident and contacted the police who were able to call in nearby boaties to help.

Everyone on board was wearing a lifejacket and no one was injured.
