Food crisis grows in North Korea

5:45 am on 2 July 2009

The United Nations World Food Programme says millions of North Koreans face a growing food crisis because of a lack of international donations and increasing restrictions on its work.

The agency says a lack of funding means it could distribute food to only about two million of the intended 6.2 million people.

It says operations are also hampered because the North Korean government has stopped it from employing Korean-speaking personnel.
