Climate protest on roof of Houses of Parliament

3:51 pm on 12 October 2009

Dozens of protesters have climbed onto the roof of the Houses of Parliament in London and unfurled banners calling for action to prevent climate change.

The activists from environmental group Greenpeace are demonstrating against what they say is a lack of action on climate change from politicians, the BBC reports.

Greenpeace insists at least 20 demonstrators will remain on the roof of Parliament and have food, warm clothes, modified sleeping bags and modified chairs allowing them to remain on the roof ridge.

Their aim is to stay there throughout Monday when Parliament reopens following the summer recess.

The campaigners believe senior politicians are not taking climate change seriously enough, saying it is critical a so-called green economy is developed quickly with jobs and industries promoting low carbon emissions.
