A man who avoided police for months throughout Mid-Canterbury has pleaded guilty to 45 charges and is facing jail.

William Stewart avoided capture for 55 days, beginning in December, and was finally arrested by police in May.

During his time on the run he committed burglaries, rammed police cars, sparked high-speed car chases and stole eight vehicles, all while in possession of a firearm.

Stewart caused almost $400,000 in damage.

William admitted the charges when he appeared in Christchurch District Court on Tuesday and will be sentenced in February.
