The Transport Agency is defending its decision to close northbound passing lanes on State Highway 1 north of Wellington at the start of the holiday weekend.
The lanes at Waikanae and Te Horo were shut down from midday on Friday and will remain closed until Saturday afternoon when the Labour weekend holiday traffic flows have eased.
The agency says closing the lanes produces a steadier flow of single lane traffic.
Wellington operations manager Mark Owen says the southbound passing lane north of Otaki will be closed on Monday as the holiday traffic returns to Wellington.
