Fishing industry wants fewer regulations

8:08 am on 15 February 2010

The Fishing Industry is lobbying the Government for a management system with less regulation.

A Seafood Industry Council initiative calls for more direct control by fishermen, which it says could lead to more employment and bigger export receipts.

The Federation of Commercial Fishermen says the industry can only reach its potential if some of the more than 8000 regulations are removed.

Fisheries Minister Phil Heatley is supportive but says the Government should still set annual fish quota volumes and enforce environmental standards.
