Police are investigating an aerial sighting of what could be a missing Nelson teenager's vehicle.

Leo Lipp-Neighbours, 19, was last seen three-and-a-half weeks ago when he left his flat in an orange Toyota Corolla stationwagon.

Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney says a passenger on an Air New Zealand flight told them she saw an orange object in a Nelson forestry area.

Mr Kaveney says it could take a couple of days to follow up on the sighting, as police are waiting to get the flight path from the airline.

He says police will replicate the flight and try to locate the orange object.
