A group set up to oppose the construction of a conservatorium in Christchurch has told a hearing it would destroy the character of the historic Arts Centre.

Two commissioners are hearing Canterbury university's application to build the music school in the historic Arts Centre complex in Christchurch.

The plan has attracted considerable opposition, with about 600 submissions made against it.

The group, Save Our Arts Centre, said the design does not respect the architectural character of the existing buildings.

The hearing continues for two weeks.
