Auckland Airport evacuation disrupts flights

9:59 pm on 27 March 2010

A false fire alarm disrupted flights at Auckland International Airport on Saturday afternoon.

Passengers and staff were evacuated from the international terminal after the Fire Service was alerted to the alarm shortly before 3pm.

A Northern Fire Service communications spokesperson said the alarm appeared to have been set off near a baggage carousel.

People at the airport told Radio New Zealand those arriving at the airport weren't being allowed into the building.

Passengers coming off flights were held at the airport with their bags and some flights were delayed.

Auckland International Airport did not return calls about the incident.

The airport's online international arrivals page showed a number of flights were being rescheduled.
