Unions fear jobs losses as result of ANZ Manila move

Banking unions in Australia and New Zealand warn jobs will be lost as a result of a decision by the ANZ Group in Australia to set up a new back-office hub in Manila, in the Philippines.

The new centre is expected to employ about 300 workers.

The ANZ says the centre will handle its Asian business and a spokesperson for its New Zealand operation says no jobs will be lost in this country.

However, the Australian Finance Sector Union says the bank has said about 100 jobs could be lost here and in Australia.

It says that number could rise as the bank moves more work to Asia.

The New Zealand banking union, Finsec, is urging the bank to reveal the true extent of possible job losses in New Zealand.

In response, the bank says: "It's disappointing Finsec is scaremongering about jobs. The primary driver for this operations hub is ANZ's growth in our Asian business which has doubled in size over the last two years.

"No decisions have been made about whether the Manila operations centre will be utilised by New Zealand. If it is decided to do so, we expect any impact on jobs to be very minimal."
