Company defends Kaipara tidal energy proposal

9:03 am on 20 April 2010

The company behind the tidal energy scheme at Kaipara Harbour in Northland has mounted a spirited defence after months of environmental criticism.

Crest Energy's project would use tidal flow in Kaipara Harbour to turn huge blades, creating 200 megawatts of electricity. Opponents say that would endanger sealife.

The company's director, Anthony Hopkins, told a tidal and wave energy conference in Wellington on Monday that opponents are wrong to claim the scheme is a threat to Maui dolphins and snapper.

Mr Hopkins told the audience that Maui dolphins have not been found in the harbour, and a fish expert has discounted the danger to snapper.

A new Environment Court hearing is due to take place in August.

Moratorium request

Meanwhile, Waatea News reports Northland hapu Te Uri o Hau told a consultation hui last week it wanted a stay of Crest Energy's resource consent application.

Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples says it makes sense to put plans on hold until the review of the Foreshore and Seabed Act is complete, and says he will take up the issue with his Government colleagues this week.

A spokesperson for attorney-general Chris Finlayson says he is looking into the moratorium request.
