Govt's online tax calculator not inflation-proofed

8:02 pm on 1 June 2010

The Labour Opposition has accused the Government of misleading the public with its on-line tax calculator, saying it should take into account Treasury's latest inflation forecast.

The party's finance spokesperson, David Cunliffe, pushed the Finance Minister Bill English on the subject during question time in Parliament today.

He asked whether the calculator used Treasury's forecast inflation rate of 5.9% for 2011.

Mr English was made to answer the question three times before the Speaker was satisfied he had confirmed inflation was not included.

The minister told the House projected wage increases are not included either, and they are expected to exceed inflation.
