Farmers likely to be allowed to shoot Canada geese

Federated Farmers is pleased the Government has indicated farmers could be given the right to shoot Canada geese, which are considered an agricultural pest.

Geese are currently a protected species, managed by Fish & Game, under schedule one of the Wildlife Act.

Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson says they will remain on schedule one, but farmers could be allowed to shoot them on or over their own property.

Federated Farmers says that's a good compromise.

The minister says a decision is likely to be announced in three weeks.
