British film director Ronald Neame has died in hospital in Los Angeles.
Neame, 99, mastered many roles behind the camera, including cinematographer, producer, screenwriter and director.
He worked as a cinematographer on films including Blithe Spirit and In Which We Serve.
He directed The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, starring Dame Maggie Smith, who won the best actress Oscar in 1969 for her performance.
Neame co-wrote screenplays including Great Expectations and Brief Encounter.
The BBC reports he also co-directed a classic disaster film The Poseidon Adventure, which was released in 1972.
