Rebel bodyguards killed

Special forces in Colombia say they have dealt a severe blow to a rebel leader by killing 12 members of his entourage.

They were all part of the personal protection squad of head of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

The BBC reports commandos launched a surprise raid on a base of the rebels' supreme leader in the Tolima mountains in central Colombia early on Sunday.

FARC has been fighting the state since the 1960s. The guerrilla group is believed to have some 8000 fighters.
