Cameras tipped soon to catch motorists in bus tunnel

Cameras could soon be operating to catch motorists using the Mount Victoria bus tunnel in Wellington.

Wellington City Council will vote next week on whether or not to make the tunnel an official bus lane.

If the move is approved, motorists caught using it will be fined $150.

The council says it's illegal for motorists to use the bus tunnel, but a small number continue to do so.

It says cameras could be operating outside the bus tunnel by the end of next month, as well as on a new bus lane in Manners Street when it is completed in November.

The tunnel was constructed in 1906, for trams.
